Walks From Glenridding

Glenridding offers routes suitable for different abilities and ambitions.

Here are six of the best walks you can do from the village.

Helvellyn via Swirral Edge and Striding Edge Circular

This classic route takes you to the third-highest peak in England and includes two of the most famous ridges in the Lake District.

You start in Glenridding and climb steadily towards Birkhouse Moor before reaching Hole-in-the-Wall.

From there, the path leads onto Striding Edge, a narrow and exposed ridge that demands care and a good head for heights.

After the summit of Helvellyn, you descend via Swirral Edge to complete the loop.

The 360-degree views from the top make the effort worthwhile on a clear day.

This is a serious mountain day that requires proper footwear, weather awareness and mountain experience.

  • Length: 13 km (8 miles)
  • Time: 6 to 8 hours
  • Difficulty: Strenuous

Aira Force and Gowbarrow Park Circular

A more moderate walk that combines woodland paths, a famous waterfall and open fell views.

The route takes you through beautiful woodland to Aira Force waterfall before climbing to the summit of Gowbarrow Fell.

You enjoy fine views across Ullswater from the higher ground.

The descent brings you back through the park area to complete the circuit.

This walk offers a good mix of scenery and is popular for good reason.

  • Length: 7 km (4.5 miles)
  • Time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Aira Force from Glenridding

This walk follows a pleasant path along the lakeside and through varied terrain to reach the impressive Aira Force waterfall.

You pass through woodland sections and enjoy changing views of Ullswater along the way.

At Aira Force, you can explore the cascades and bridges before returning by the same route or making a small variation.

It provides a satisfying half-day out with less ascent than the higher routes.

  • Length: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Time: 3 to 4 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Glenridding Dodd and Sheffield Pike Circular

This route gives you excellent views over Glenridding and Ullswater while staying at a more manageable height than Helvellyn.

You climb steeply at first to reach Glenridding Dodd before continuing to Sheffield Pike.

The paths involve some rocky sections but reward you with panoramic views of the Helvellyn range and the lake below.

It makes an ideal choice when you want a proper fell walk without the extreme exposure of the high ridges.

  • Length: 9 km (5.7 miles)
  • Time: 3 to 4 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

Glenridding Ullswater Lake Circular Walk

For those who prefer to stay closer to the water, this longer route follows much of the shoreline around Ullswater.

You pass through a variety of landscapes, including woodland, open shores and quieter sections of the lake.

The walk offers constant views across the water to the surrounding fells.

While it covers a significant distance, the gradients remain relatively gentle compared to the mountain routes.

Many walkers complete sections of it and use the Ullswater steamer for part of the journey.

  • Length: Sections vary (full loop approx 31 km)
  • Time: 9 to 10 hours for a full loop
  • Difficulty: Hard (shorter sections available)

Glenridding to Howtown via Ullswater Shore

One of the most popular low-level walks in the area follows the eastern shore of Ullswater to Howtown.

The path stays close to the lake for much of the way and offers superb views throughout.

You walk through woodland and more open areas with constant lake views on your left.

Many people take the Ullswater steamer from Glenridding to Howtown and then walk back, making it a very enjoyable day with minimal planning.

  • Length: 10.5 km (6.5 miles) one way
  • Time: 3.5 to 4.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
