Access to the base is no longer possible, so views of the waterfall are from above.

Colwith Force sends water down 12 metres in stages through woodland.

The river squeezes through a gap, forming a curtain of water. It sits near Elterwater, close to Skelwith Force.

Use the same car park at Elterwater (LA22 9HU) and walk 2.1 kilometres, about 25 minutes on level paths with some forest sections.

Combine it with Skelwith Force for a longer trail.

Rydal Falls cascades down a rocky slope amid green plants and moss.

A stone hut called the Grot, built in 1668, frames the view from a window seat.

The drop measures 4.5 metres.

Park at Rydal Hall (LA22 9LX) or nearby, then walk a few minutes to the location.

Aira Force

Aira Force plunges 20 metres over rocks, framed by a stone bridge at the top.

6. Tom Gill Waterfalls

Tom Gill features two fast-flowing drops along a stream. The water rushes over rocks on its way to Tarn Hows.

It lies near Coniston, west of Windermere. Access via paths from Tarn Hows or Glen Mary car park.

The trail follows the stream uphill.

7. Sour Milk Gill

Sour Milk Gill tumbles down from Easedale Tarn in a series of cascades.

The white, churning water gives it the name. Views stretch to surrounding fells.

It positions near Grasmere, north of Windermere.
